Addressing Life-Threatening Fungal Infections
Patients who are critically ill or immunocompromised, (i.e., those with weakened immune systems) are at increased risk of developing serious infections. Among these, fungal infections can affect the bloodstream or organs and may require timely medical attention.
Two commonly encountered types in clinical settings include:
- Candidemia: A bloodstream infection caused by Candida species, often observed in hospitalised patients, particularly in intensive care settings.
- Invasive Mould Infections (IMI): Infections caused by moulds such as Aspergillus, primarily affecting individuals with weakened immune systems.
The management of these conditions requires prompt diagnosis and appropriate medical intervention.
