Addressing Life-Threatening Fungal Infections

Patients who are critically ill or immunocompromised, i. e., those with weakened immune systems, are more likely to develop dangerous infections. Among the most serious are fungal infections, which can affect the bloodstream or organs.

Two types are especially important to be aware of:

  • Candidemia: A bloodstream infection caused by Candida fungi. It is common in ICUs and can be life threatening, with studies showing more than 44% mortality if not treated quickly.
  • Invasive Mould Infections (IMI): Caused by moulds such as Aspergillus. In India, these infections have been reported with mortality rates close to 65%, making rapid diagnosis and treatment essential.

For these conditions, starting the right antifungal medicine as early as possible can make a big difference in a patient’s recovery.
